A person may have the legal right to vote, but poverty can make that freedom painfully difficult to exercise. When people lack food, jobs, healthcare, and basic security, a small payment can become more urgent than promises about the future. Ati Matunda yako mbere.

This is where democracy faces one of its greatest tests. Are citizens freely choosing their leaders, or are their immediate struggles influencing decisions that will shape their lives for years?

The problem is not that poor people lack intelligence or political awareness. It is that desperation can turn a fundamental right into a difficult bargain.

A vote should be an expression of hope, conviction, and accountability, not a transaction driven by hunger.

But here is the uncomfortable question: Can political freedom be meaningful when economic freedom remains out of reach?
