{"id":6665,"date":"2017-08-28T04:05:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T04:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/?p=6665"},"modified":"2017-08-28T04:05:36","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T04:05:36","slug":"belarus-allows-construction-of-luxury-homes-atop-jewish-cemeteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/28\/belarus-allows-construction-of-luxury-homes-atop-jewish-cemeteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Belarus allows construction of luxury homes atop Jewish cemeteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"cb-title-fi\"><em><strong>The bones of Jews \u201cwill end up in city dumpsters,\u201d laments an activist fighting to stop construction of luxury apartments over Jewish cemeteries in Belarus, according to a JTA report.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A court in Belarus has rejected a motion to prevent construction of apartments atop two former Jewish cemeteries, the <em>Jewish Telegraphic Agency<\/em> (JTA) reported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Construction of apartments above a former Jewish cemetery in Gomel, eastern Belarus will take place despite a motion filed against the building plans by an American Jewish activist for the preservation of Jewish heritage sites in his native country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ruling at the Tsentralny District Court allowing continuation of the housing projects both in Gomel and Mazyr means that the bones of Jews \u201cwill end up in city dumpsters,\u201d Yakov Goodman, who filed the motion, told JTA.<\/p>\n<div class=\"a-single a-26\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last year, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makai and Lesley Weiss, chair of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America\u2019s Heritage Abroad, signed a joint declaration at the World Jewish Congress headquarters, stating, \u201cEach party will take appropriate steps to protect and preserve properties that represent the cultural heritage of all national, religious, or ethnic groups that reside or resided in its territory,\u201d according to JTA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Goodman, however, believes that the signing has encouraged authorities \u201cto further attacks on Jewish heritage sites,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was not Goodman\u2019s first squabble with Belarusian authorities.
