Training a single AI model can consume as much power as thousands of homes use in a year, and the data centers being built to run AI on a global scale are being sized in gigawatts, not megawatts. It is staggering.

Every proposed fix to this problem — more efficient computer chips, smarter cooling of data centers, building nuclear fission reactors — does not solve the underlying arithmetic of supply and demand. Only fusion power offers a path that matches the scale and safety to feed AI’s enormous appetite for electricity.

Solar panels and wind turbines, by their very nature, generate electricity intermittently and cannot provide anywhere near the scale of power required. AI data centers need a constant, round-the-clock power supply that cannot wait for the sun to rise or the wind to pick up. Battery storage at the scale needed does not yet exist and is not even close to existing. Nuclear fission is the closest fit today, but the large reactors take a decade or more to permit and build, face enormous capital costs, and create radioactive waste. Existing nuclear power stations either cannot meet the need or need massive modernization.

Nuclear fusion solves each of these constraints in a way nothing else does. Its fuel is essentially hydrogen, of which we, surrounded by two large oceans, have unlimited quantities. Fusion produces no long-lived radioactive waste and carries none of the risks that make fission reactors politically difficult. Building fusion reactors near the data centers that need them would avoid the transmission bottlenecks that already afflict America’s electrical grid system.

As China doubles down on AI, with its capability of creating enormous advances in areas that range from defense to medicine, we need to invest in a power source that will allow the United States not only to build what it needs but actually to win the AI competition. It is not a race we can afford to lose.

Fusion is not yet commercially available, but it can be if public and private dollars are devoted to achieving the strategic goal of powering America’s 21st century future.
