And yet we\u2019ve done nothing to recapture it from the king of Aram!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n 4\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Then he turned to Jehoshaphat and asked, \u201cWill you join me in battle to recover Ramoth-gilead?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, \u201cWhy, of course! You and I are as one. My troops are your troops, and my horses are your horses.\u201d 5\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jehoshaphat added, \u201cBut first let\u2019s find out what the Lord<\/span> says.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 6\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>So the king of Israel summoned the prophets, about 400 of them, and asked them, \u201cShould I go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should I hold back?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n They all replied, \u201cYes, go right ahead! The Lord will give the king victory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 7\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But Jehoshaphat asked, \u201cIs there not also a prophet of the Lord<\/span> here? We should ask him the same question.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 8\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The king of Israel replied to Jehoshaphat, \u201cThere is one more man who could consult the Lord<\/span> for us, but I hate him. He never prophesies anything but trouble for me! His name is Micaiah son of Imlah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Jehoshaphat replied, \u201cThat\u2019s not the way a king should talk! Let\u2019s hear what he has to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 9\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, \u201cQuick! Bring Micaiah son of Imlah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Micaiah Prophesies against Ahab.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n 10\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah, dressed in their royal robes, were sitting on thrones at the threshing floor near the gate of Samaria. All of Ahab\u2019s prophets were prophesying there in front of them. 11\u00a0<\/sup>One of them, Zedekiah son of Kenaanah, made some iron horns and proclaimed, \u201cThis is what the Lord<\/span> says: With these horns you will gore the Arameans to death!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 12\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>All the other prophets agreed. \u201cYes,\u201d they said, \u201cgo up to Ramoth-gilead and be victorious, for the Lord<\/span> will give the king victory!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 13\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Meanwhile, the messenger who went to get Micaiah said to him, \u201cLook, all the prophets are promising victory for the king. Be sure that you agree with them and promise success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 14\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But Micaiah replied, \u201cAs surely as the Lord<\/span> lives, I will say only what the Lord<\/span> tells me to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 15\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>When Micaiah arrived before the king, Ahab asked him, \u201cMicaiah, should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should we hold back?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Micaiah replied sarcastically, \u201cYes, go up and be victorious, for the Lord<\/span> will give the king victory!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 16\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But the king replied sharply, \u201cHow many times must I demand that you speak only the truth to me when you speak for the Lord<\/span>?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 17\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Then Micaiah told him, \u201cIn a vision I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd. And the Lord<\/span> said, \u2018Their master has been killed.[<\/sup><\/span>a<\/span><\/sup><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup> Send them home in peace.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 18\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>\u201cDidn\u2019t I tell you?\u201d the king of Israel exclaimed to Jehoshaphat. \u201cHe never prophesies anything but trouble for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 19\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Then Micaiah continued, \u201cListen to what the Lord<\/span> says! I saw the Lord<\/span> sitting on his throne with all the armies of heaven around him, on his right and on his left. 20\u00a0<\/sup>And the Lord<\/span> said, \u2018Who can entice Ahab to go into battle against Ramoth-gilead so he can be killed?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere were many suggestions, 21\u00a0<\/sup>and finally a spirit approached the Lord<\/span> and said, \u2018I can do it!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n 22\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>\u201c\u2018How will you do this?\u2019 the Lord<\/span> asked.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd the spirit replied, \u2018I will go out and inspire all of Ahab\u2019s prophets to speak lies.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c\u2018You will succeed,\u2019 said the Lord<\/span>. \u2018Go ahead and do it.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n 23\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>\u201cSo you see, the Lord<\/span> has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all your prophets. For the Lord<\/span> has pronounced your doom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 24\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah walked up to Micaiah and slapped him across the face. \u201cSince when did the Spirit of the Lord<\/span> leave me to speak to you?\u201d he demanded.<\/span><\/p>\n 25\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Micaiah replied, \u201cYou will find out soon enough when you are trying to hide in some secret room!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 26\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>\u201cArrest him!\u201d the king of Israel ordered. \u201cTake him back to Amon, the governor of the city, and to my son Joash. 27\u00a0<\/sup>Give them this order from the king: \u2018Put this man in prison, and feed him nothing but bread and water until I return safely from the battle!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 28\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But Micaiah replied, \u201cIf you return safely, it will mean that the Lord<\/span> has not spoken through me!\u201d Then he added to those standing around, \u201cEveryone mark my words!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Death of Ahab.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n 29\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>So King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah led their armies against Ramoth-gilead. 30\u00a0<\/sup>The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, \u201cAs we go into battle, I will disguise myself so no one will recognize me, but you wear your royal robes.\u201d So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.<\/span><\/p>\n 31\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Meanwhile, the king of Aram had issued these orders to his thirty-two chariot commanders: \u201cAttack only the king of Israel. Don\u2019t bother with anyone else!\u201d 32\u00a0<\/sup>So when the Aramean chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat in his royal robes, they went after him. \u201cThere is the king of Israel!\u201d they shouted. But when Jehoshaphat called out, 33\u00a0<\/sup>the chariot commanders realized he was not the king of Israel, and they stopped chasing him.<\/span><\/p>\n 34\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>An Aramean soldier, however, randomly shot an arrow at the Israelite troops and hit the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. \u201cTurn the horses[<\/sup><\/span>b<\/span><\/sup><\/a>]<\/span><\/sup> and get me out of here!\u201d Ahab groaned to the driver of his chariot. \u201cI\u2019m badly wounded!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 35\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The battle raged all that day, and the king remained propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran down to the floor of his chariot, and as evening arrived he died. 36\u00a0<\/sup>Just as the sun was setting, the cry ran through his troops: \u201cWe\u2019re done for!
