{"id":23473,"date":"2025-12-27T03:33:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T03:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/?p=23473"},"modified":"2025-12-27T03:36:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T03:36:05","slug":"european-leaders-condemn-us-visa-bans-as-row-over-censorship-escalates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/27\/european-leaders-condemn-us-visa-bans-as-row-over-censorship-escalates\/","title":{"rendered":"European leaders condemn US visa bans as row over \u2018censorship\u2019 escalates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Washington accused of \u2018coercion and intimidation\u2019 after five leading figures behind digital safety law campaign targeted. <\/em><em>European leaders including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/emmanuel-macron\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>\u00a0have accused Washington of \u201ccoercion and intimidation\u201d, after the US imposed a visa ban on five prominent European figures who have been at heart of the campaign to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The visa bans were imposed on Tuesday on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thierry Breton<\/span>, the former EU <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">commissioner<\/span> and one of the architects of the bloc\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Digital Services<\/span> Act (DSA), and four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23475\" src=\"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/flags-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/flags-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/egretnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/flags-500x365.jpg 500w, https:\/\/egretnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/flags.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The other individuals targeted were <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Imran Ahmed<\/span>, the British chief executive of the US-based Center for Countering Digital Hate; Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon of the German non-profit HateAid; and Clare Melford, co-founder of the Global Disinformation Index.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Justifying the visa bans, the US secretary of state,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/marco-rubio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Marco Rubio<\/a>, wrote on X: \u201cFor far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose. The Trump administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move, with Brussels signaling it could \u201crespond swiftly and decisively\u201d against the \u201cunjustified measures\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship while European leaders say the regulations are necessary to control hate speech, but the row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Donald Trump\u2019s administration and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Europe<\/a>. Artificial intelligence and digital technologies were always likely to become a major theatre of confrontation between the US and Europe, as these technologies become ever more central to wielding power.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Macron condemned the visa ban in furious terms. \u201cThese measures amount to intimidation and coercion aimed at undermining European digital sovereignty,\u201d he wrote, also on X. \u201cThe European Union\u2019s digital regulations were adopted following a democratic and sovereign process by the European Parliament and the Council. They apply within Europe to ensure fair competition among platforms, without targeting any third country, and to ensure that what is illegal offline is also illegal online. The rules governing the European Union\u2019s digital space are not meant to be determined outside Europe\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>He later added he had spoken to Breton, who is French, and had thanked him for his work. \u201cWe will not give up, and we will protect Europe\u2019s independence and the freedom of Europeans,\u201d Macron said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The French foreign minister, Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot, said: \u201cThe peoples of Europe are free and sovereign and cannot let the rules governing their digital space be imposed by others upon them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Breton, a former French finance minister and the European commissioner for the internal market from 2019 to 2024, said: \u201cIs McCarthy\u2019s witch-hunt back?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cAs a reminder: 90% of the European parliament \u2013 our democratically elected body \u2013 and all 27 member states unanimously voted the DSA. To our American friends: censorship isn\u2019t where you think it is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The EU Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said: \u201cFreedom of speech is the foundation of our strong and vibrant European democracy. We are proud of it. We will protect it.\u201d A commission spokesperson added: \u201cIf needed, we will respond swiftly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>In the UK, the government said it was \u201cfully committed\u201d to upholding free speech.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The EU law, passed in 2022, requires large digital platforms to show they are taking steps to address online risks, including the spread of illegal content, hate speech and the use of disinformation to manipulate election results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>After two years of investigation, Elon Musk\u2019s X platform was this month fined \u20ac120m (\u00a3104m) over a series of transgressions mainly relating to transparency, including deceiving users about verification checks, and researcher\u2019s access.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Washington said the EU was pursuing \u201cundue\u201d restrictions on freedom of expression and the DSA\u2019s s extraterritorial restrictions were designed to weaken US tech firms and US citizens.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Breton was replaced in the internal market role at the EU by another French politician, St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, who is the Commission\u2019s executive vice-president. S\u00e9journ\u00e9 expressed his support for his predecessor saying: \u201cNo sanction will silence the sovereignty of the European peoples. Total solidarity with him and all the people of Europe affected by this\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Outlining the bans on Tuesday, US undersecretary for public diplomacy, Sarah Rogers, classified Breton as a \u201cmastermind\u201d of the DSA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Germany\u2019s justice ministry said the two German campaigners had the government\u2019s \u201csupport and solidarity\u201d and the visa bans were unacceptable, adding that Hate Aid supported people affected by unlawful digital hate speech. The German foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, echoed the remarks on X: \u201cThe DSA was democratically adopted by the EU for the EU \u2013 it does not have extraterritorial effect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Spain\u2019s foreign ministry also condemned the US measures, saying in a statement: \u201cA safe digital space, free from illegal content and disinformation, is a fundamental value for democracy in Europe and a responsibility for everyone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cAnyone who describes this as censorship is misrepresenting our constitutional system. The rules by which we want to live in the digital space in Germany and in Europe are not decided in Washington.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dennis Radtke, an MEP and member of the German ruling CDU, said: \u201cThe Trump fans in Europe defend this as a fight for freedom of speech. Where exactly has an opinion been suppressed? Where is the fight for freedom of speech with regard to China and Russia? It\u2019s only about business here and the fight against the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Rapha\u00ebl Glucksmann, a French socialist MEP, said in a message to Rubio: \u201cFor far too long, Europe has been weak in implementing its own laws and defending its own interests. You have chosen to cosy up tyrants and confront democracies. The time has come for us to stand up. Kneel as much as you want in front of Putin, we are the free world now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe are not a colony of the United States. We are Europeans, we must defend our laws, our principles, our interests. This scandalous sanction against Thierry Breton pays tribute to his fight for our sovereignty. We will continue it together. To the end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The row is the latest to showcase tensions between the US and Europe. In August, Washington imposed sanctions on the French judge Nicolas Yann Guillou, who sits on the international criminal court, for the tribunal\u2019s targeting of Israeli leaders and a past decision to investigate US officials.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Michel Duclos, a former senior French diplomat and resident senior fellow in geopolitics and diplomacy at the Institut Montaigne think tank lamented the move, referencing Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev\u2019s recent trip to Miami for talks on the Ukraine war. He said: \u201cDmitriev celebrated in Miami, Breton denied US visa: Europe is becoming the new Russia for Washington. It brings to mind the 1920s \u2013 America favouring the former enemy [Germany) against its former allies \u2013 but worse.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The chair of the German Journalists\u2019 Association, Mika Beuster, expressed, solidarity with the Berlin-based Hate Aid. \u201cThis is censorship in its purest form, the likes of which we have previously only known from autocratic regimes,\u201d said Beuster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">\u00a0egretnewseditor@gmail.com<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington accused of \u2018coercion and intimidation\u2019 after five leading figures behind digital safety law campaign targeted.
