Venezuela\u2019s military is unlikely to be able to match US aggression. But President Maduro has other options, experts say. <\/em>Venezuela on Tuesday announced what it called a major nationwide\u00a0military deployment<\/a>\u00a0in response to the presence of growing United States naval forces off its coast.<\/em><\/h4>\n

On Thursday, the US also unveiled an operation called\u00a0Southern Spear<\/a>, which it said was intended to target \u201cnarcoterrorists\u201d in the Western Hemisphere.<\/em><\/p>\n

The escalation has raised alarm in Caracas, where officials worried the US may be using these operations as a pretext to force President Nicolas Maduro out of power.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe tell the American empire not to dare. We are prepared,\u201d Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said at an event in Caracas.<\/em><\/p>\n

What has happened over the past few weeks?<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Tensions between Washington and Caracas have been spiralling for weeks as the Trump administration has hit a series of boats in the Caribbean Sea and, more recently, the Pacific Ocean, claiming they were carrying individuals smuggling narcotics into the US.<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a020th strike<\/a>\u00a0took place last week, US officials said. In all, about 80 people have been killed. The Trump administration has not presented any evidence to back its assertion that the bombed boats had narcotics or drug smugglers on them or that the vessels were headed to the US. It has also not offered any legal justification for its actions, which many experts believe violate international law.<\/em><\/p>\n

At the center of Washington\u2019s allegations is an unsubstantiated claim that Maduro is driving narcotics smuggling to the US in cahoots with cartels.<\/em><\/p>\n
