The debt stood at $<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">36<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">trillion<\/span> in November 2024, and $<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">35 trillion<\/span> that July.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Michael A Peterson, CEO of the Peter G Peterson Foundation, said US lawmakers were failing to live up to their \u201cbasic fiscal duties\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cAdding trillion after trillion to the debt and budgeting-by-crisis is no way for a great nation like America to run its finances,\u201d Peterson said in a statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cInstead of letting the debt clock tick higher and higher, lawmakers should take advantage of the many responsible reforms that would put our nation on a stronger path for the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>In May, Moody\u2019s ratings downgraded the US government\u2019s credit rating from Aaa to Aa1, citing the failure of successive administrations to \u201creverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The move followed similar downgrades by rating agencies Fitch and Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s in 2011 and 2023, respectively.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>While there is debate among economists about how much debt the US can take on before triggering a financial crisis, there is widespread agreement that the current trajectory is unsustainable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Get instant alerts and updates based on your interests.
