Recent meetings in Paris between high-level Israeli and Syrian diplomats have reportedly resulted in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/article\/rksdwpydxx\">de-escalation<\/a>\u00a0of tensions as well as in establishing significant security improvements for Israel along its border with Syria.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Israel&#8217;s Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer was apparently successful in extracting a promise from the Sharaa regime\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/netanyahu-vows-no-syrian-forces-south-of-damascus-as-bedouins-druze-fight-despite-truce\/\">not to dispatch<\/a>\u00a0Syrian military forces south of Damascus. This agreement exists in large part to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/19\/syria-declares-ceasefire-in-suwayda-deploys-forces-to-restore-security\">safeguard<\/a>\u00a0Druze communities in Syria&#8217;s Suweida Province. Syria&#8217;s concession was in keeping with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s stated intention to defend the Druze against any repeat of July massacres by regime-affiliated terrorists and Bedouin tribesmen. An estimated 1,300 people were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/syriacpress.com\/blog\/2025\/07\/24\/clashes-in-suwayda-leave-over-1300-dead-as-syrian-government-pledges-accountability-despite-little-progress-in-investigation-of-previous-coastal-massacres\/\">killed<\/a>\u00a0in the attacks, many of whom were Druze civilians, including women and children. Netanyahu&#8217;s pledge of protection to the Druze was possibly given to thank so many of Israel&#8217;s Druze citizens who have loyally been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icejusa.org\/2025\/07\/24\/who-are-the-druze-and-why-israel-supports-them\/\">serving<\/a>\u00a0in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Just as significant was the Syrian regime&#8217;s agreement to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/article\/rksdwpydxx\">demilitarize<\/a>\u00a0two of its provinces<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0Quneitra and Dara, both of which lie along Israel&#8217;s border. Now, evidently, no heavy weapons will be permitted in these Syrian provinces.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Damascus apparently did not challenge Jerusalem&#8217;s recent move into a new area in the Golan Heights that had been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metatronproject.org\/2025\/04\/golanheights\/\">administered<\/a>\u00a0by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force since 1974. The new area is now being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/new-details-emerge-on-israel-s-actions-in-syrian-buffer-zone-change-in-us-position\/7906679.html\">safeguarded<\/a>\u00a0by the IDF as a buffer zone between Israel and Syria.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Israel&#8217;s diplomatic triumph was facilitated by the tenuous hold on power of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) regime in Damascus, led Sharaa,\u00a0<a href=\"vhttps:\/\/www.meforum.org\/mef-online\/backgrounder-abu-muhammad-al-julani\">the former Commander<\/a>\u00a0of al-Qaeda&#8217;s Syrian branch, Jabhat al-Nusra. Sharaa controls Damascus and its environs, but much of Syria&#8217;s traditional\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jcpa.org\/can-al-jolani-unite-syria-and-prevent-its-disintegration\/\">territory<\/a>\u00a0may not be totally under his control. Sharaa does not seem to have firm control over the thousands of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meforum.org\/mef-observer\/syrias-hayat-tahrir-al-sham-cannot-its-abandon-jihadist-allies\">foreign jihadists<\/a>\u00a0in Syria who came from Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Tajikistan and China&#8217;s Muslim Uyghur community, who helped the HTS to seize power by overthrowing the regime of Bashar al-Assad last December.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sharaa&#8217;s greatest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/02\/middleeast\/isis-recruits-global-threat-intl\">potential threat<\/a>\u00a0to continued HTS rule might be a still-potent Islamic State (ISIS)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icct.nl\/publication\/threat-isis-fragmentated-syria\">challenging<\/a>\u00a0his administration.
