Donald Trump, the controversial US presidential front-runner for the Republicans, postponed his visit to Israel, saying he doesn\u2019t want to put Netanyahu under pressure. A petition urging the Israeli leader not to meet with Trump was signed by 37 lawmakers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Donald\u00a0Trump\u00a0on Thursday called off a planned December trip to Israel, shelving what was shaping up to be an awkward visit by the Republican presidential front-runner following comments that managed to offend Muslims and Jews alike.<\/p>\n

Dozens of Israeli lawmakers had called for Prime Minister Benjamin\u00a0Netanyahu\u00a0to cancel the Dec. 28 meeting with\u00a0Trump. The prime minister, apparently wary of being seen as endorsing\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0positions, had given only guarded remarks, saying he would honor a previously scheduled meeting but at the same time rejecting\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0calls to ban Muslims from entering the United States.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0announced his decision on his Twitter feed, saying he would reschedule \u201cat a later date after I become President of the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0told\u00a0Fox News<\/em>\u00a0there were many reasons he decided to hold off on a trip, among them that he didn\u2019t want to put\u00a0Netanyahu\u00a0in a bind.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, I did a campaign ad for him, and he\u2019s a good man, but I didn\u2019t want to put him under pressure,\u201d Trump\u00a0said. \u201cI also did it because I\u2019m in the midst of a powerful campaign that\u2019s going very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0has had the GOP in turmoil over his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. in the wake of last week\u2019s mass shooting by an Islamist couple that killed 14 people in\u00a0San Bernardino, California<\/a>. Critics say the proposal is racist and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has maintained a wide lead in most early polling, also sparked criticism among many American Jews last week after speaking to a gathering of Jewish donors.<\/p>\n

He was booed after refusing to endorse Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel \u2014 a key Israeli position. The United States, like most of the international community, refuses to recognize Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital and says the city\u2019s status must be resolved in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0also made remarks that some said\u00a0promoted Jewish stereotypes<\/a>. \u201cI know why you\u2019re not going to support me: you\u2019re not going to support me because I don\u2019t want your money,\u201d\u00a0Trump\u00a0said. \u201cYou want to control your own politician.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marc Zell, the co-chairman of Republicans Overseas Israel, said that there had been no pressure from the organization, which represents Republican expatriates living in Israel, for\u00a0Trump\u00a0not to come. However, stressing that he was expressing his personal opinion, Zell\u00a0said it was all for the best that\u00a0Trump\u00a0had canceled.<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0comments on Muslims and Jews were in \u201cpoor taste\u201d and showed that the real estate mogul and reality TV star does not have what it takes to be president.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s\u00a0office declined comment on the cancellation.<\/p>\n
