This development threatens not only Bangladesh&#8217;s fragile democracy but also poses a strategic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/21778\/bangladeshi-workers-global-jihad\">security risk<\/a>\u00a0to South Asia and the wider free world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>On July 25, 2025, local media\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bangla.bdnews24.com\/opinion\/654474d0e966\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, president of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, publicly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zw-cKJzmvho\">declared<\/a>\u00a0that Hindus and other non-Muslims must pay the\u00a0jizya\u00a0tax.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanatanprabhat.org\/english\/145071.html\">According<\/a>\u00a0to one report from July 31:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;Non-Muslims living in Bangladesh should be made to pay the &#8216;Jizya tax&#8217;. Since Muslims pay &#8216;Zakat&#8217; (A portion of their wealth donated for religious purposes), if equal rights are desired, then Hindus should pay the Jizya. This is what is correct as per Sharia law, said a leader of the political party Jamaat-e-Islami in a public gathering.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The\u00a0jizya\u00a0is a tax historically imposed on non-Muslims in Islamic states and empires, as a symbol of subjugation and second-class status. Its collection in present-day Bangladesh marks a dangerous shift from the country&#8217;s secular founding principles toward a theocratic order.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Global context: Muslim Brotherhood under scrutiny<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>On July 16, US Senator Ted Cruz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/newsroom\/in-the-news\/sen-cruz-introduces-the-muslim-brotherhood-terrorist-designation-act\">introduced<\/a>\u00a0the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2025, aimed at designating the MB as a foreign terrorist organization. This move, if passed, would have major implications for groups tied to the MB worldwide, including Jamaat-e-Islami.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>However, security experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orfonline.org\/expert-speak\/us-government-funds-sister-organisations-terror-groups-fights\">caution<\/a>\u00a0that such a designation, while significant, would not automatically halt the MB&#8217;s global expansion. The organization has proven adept at using political, financial and social fronts to continue its influence covertly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Jamaat-e-Islami&#8217;s troubled past and international ties<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Jamaat-e-Islami sided with Pakistan in Bangladesh&#8217;s 1971 war of independence, the organization actively collaborating with the Pakistani military during the genocide of Bengali civilians. Today, the organization enjoys continued patronage from Pakistan&#8217;s Inter-Services Intelligence, as well as various Islamist and jihadist organizations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>In the United States, Jamaat-e-Islami maintains deep ties with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA). USAID also encourages donations to the Zakat Foundation of America, a charity that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2017\/01\/terrorist-groups-american-charities-fund-ufa-hamas-dawah-social-services\/\">funds<\/a>\u00a0groups in Gaza linked to Hamas and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zakat.org\/en\/zf-executive-director-meets-president-erdogan-un-general-assembly\/\">closely tied<\/a>\u00a0to the Islamist Turkish regime and to Islamic Relief, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meforum.org\/7403\/islamic-relief-charity-extremism-terror\">flagship financial institution<\/a>\u00a0of the global Muslim Brotherhood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;Islamic Relief is the largest Muslim charity in the Western world. Yet it has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meforum.org\/MiddleEastForum\/media\/MEFLibrary\/pdf\/Islamic-Relief-Dossier-v3.pdf\">banned<\/a>\u00a0in the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and regions of Bangladesh where Rohingya refugees live because of its reported radicalization efforts. It has also been named a leading Islamist institution by German and Swedish officials. Yet Islamic Relief still enjoys a close relationship with various components of the U.S. government. Both the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/partnerships\/partnerships\">Department of Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/news-release\/2017\/09\/18\/volunteers-play-integral-role-disaster-relief-and-recovery-efforts\">Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a>\u00a0list it as a partner. In May, USAID\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maxfinberg\/status\/1134406934667419648\">hosted<\/a>\u00a0Islamic Relief for an\u00a0iftar\u00a0meal. And in 2018, Acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore agreed to be the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/speech\/remarks-acting-assistant-attorney-general-john-gore-islamic-relief-capitol-hill-ramadan\">guest of honor<\/a>\u00a0at an Islamic Relief reception on Capitol Hill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Other endorsements of Islamist groups announced by federal bodies include the terror-tied\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.americorps.gov\/mp\/listing\/viewListing.do?id=73448\">Council on American-Islamic Relations<\/a>\u00a0(CAIR), which was established as part of a Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas network in the United States, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/share.america.gov\/faith-based-charities-lending-helping-hand\/\">Islamic Circle of North America<\/a>, which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/opinions\/a-south-asian-threat-in-america\/\">linked<\/a>\u00a0to the violent South Asian Islamist movement Jamaat-e-Islami. In addition, officials at one of CAIR&#8217;s most extreme branches, CAIR-Florida, have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/homeland-security\/south-florida-islamists-undermine-national-security-by-partnering-with-u-s-government-officials\/\">meeting<\/a>\u00a0Department of Justice and DHS officials.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Bangladesh&#8217;s dangerous turn toward theocracy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Since last year&#8217;s regime change coup, Bangladesh&#8217;s secular political foundations have been eroding rapidly. Last week, Ziaul Huq Zia \u2014 a notorious Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist and one of the US State Department&#8217;s most wanted fugitives \u2014 openly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weeklyblitz.net\/2025\/08\/10\/al-qaeda-major-zia-insurgency-offices-bangladesh-india\/\">called<\/a>\u00a0for establishing offices of terrorist movements from Manipur, Khalistan, and Kashmir inside Bangladesh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Zia, believed to have secretly returned to Bangladesh after last year&#8217;s jihadist-backed coup, made his statement in a Facebook post. Strangely, shortly after his post was publicized, the US State Department&#8217;s website quietly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/salah_shoaib\/status\/1956038593300062712\">removed<\/a>\u00a0its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/rewards-for-justice-reward-offer-for-information-on-the-murder-of-avijit-roy-and-attack-on-rafida-bonya-ahmed\/\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0of a $5 million bounty on him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>The alarming implications<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The imposition of the\u00a0jizya\u00a0tax by Jamaat-e-Islami is not an isolated incident. It is a clear signal that Bangladesh&#8217;s religious minorities are being systematically targeted under a creeping Sharia-based agenda. This action not only violates the secular principles enshrined in Bangladesh&#8217;s 1972 Constitution, but also undermines international human rights norms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The silence of Bangladesh&#8217;s current interim government on this matter raises troubling questions: Is this the beginning of state-sanctioned religious persecution in Bangladesh? And if so, how far will it go before the international community intervenes?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>If the\u00a0jizya\u00a0tax collection is allowed to continue unchecked, Bangladesh risks sliding into a medieval-style religious apartheid, where Hindus, Christians, Buddhists and other non-Muslim minorities are reduced to second-class citizens in their own country.
