Before World War I, the majority of the territory that is now Ukraine was part of the\u00a0<\/em>Russian Empire<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0with a smaller western region belonging to the\u00a0<\/em>Austro-Hungarian Empire<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>The border between these two empires had been established at the\u00a0Congress of Vienna<\/a>\u00a0in 1815. While Ukraine was not an independent political entity at that time, it had a complex history of being under the rule of various powers, including the\u00a0<\/span>Grand Duchy of Lithuania<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Kingdom of Poland<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/em>Cossack Hetmanate<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0before the Russian Empire.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Cossack Hetmanate emerged in central Ukraine in the 17th century but was partitioned between Russia and Poland before being absorbed by the Russian Empire in the late 19th century<\/em>. Ukrainian nationalism developed and, following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the short-lived Ukrainian People’s Republic was formed.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ukraine<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a country in\u00a0Eastern Europe<\/a>. It is the\u00a0second-largest country in Europe<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0Russia<\/a>, which\u00a0borders it<\/a>\u00a0to the east and northeast.\u00a0Ukraine also borders\u00a0Belarus<\/a>\u00a0to the north;\u00a0Poland<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Slovakia<\/a>\u00a0to the west;\u00a0Hungary<\/a>,\u00a0Romania<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Moldova<\/a>\u00a0to the southwest; and the\u00a0Black Sea<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Sea of Azov<\/a>\u00a0to the south and southeast.\u00a0Kyiv<\/a>\u00a0is the nation’s capital and\u00a0largest city<\/a>, followed by\u00a0Kharkov<\/a>,\u00a0Odesa<\/a>, and\u00a0Dnipro<\/a>. Ukraine’s\u00a0official language<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0Ukrainian<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Humans have inhabited Ukraine since 32,000 BC. During the\u00a0Middle Ages<\/a>, it was the site of\u00a0early Slavic<\/a>\u00a0expansion and later became a key Centre of\u00a0East Slavic<\/a>\u00a0culture under the state of\u00a0Kievan Rus’<\/a>, which emerged in the 9th century. Kievan Rus’ became the largest and most powerful realm in Europe in the 10th and 11th centuries, but gradually disintegrated into rival regional powers before being destroyed by the\u00a0Mongols<\/a>\u00a0in the 13th century. For the next 600 years the area was contested, divided, and ruled by a variety of external powers, including the\u00a0Grand Duchy of Lithuania<\/a>, the\u00a0Kingdom of Poland<\/a>, the\u00a0Polish\u2013Lithuanian Commonwealth<\/a>, the\u00a0Austrian Empire<\/a>, the\u00a0Ottoman Empire<\/a>, and the\u00a0Tsardom of Russia<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cossack Hetmanate<\/a>\u00a0emerged in\u00a0central Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0in the 17th century but was partitioned between Russia and Poland before being absorbed by the\u00a0Russian Empire<\/a>\u00a0in the late 19th century.\u00a0Ukrainian nationalism<\/a>\u00a0developed and, following the\u00a0Russian Revolution<\/a>\u00a0in 1917, the short-lived\u00a0Ukrainian People’s Republic<\/a>\u00a0was formed. The\u00a0Bolsheviks<\/a>\u00a0consolidated control<\/a>\u00a0over much of the former empire and established the\u00a0Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic<\/a>, which became a\u00a0constituent republic<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Soviet Union<\/a>\u00a0in 1922. <\/em><\/p>\n

In the early 1930s, millions of Ukrainians died in the\u00a0Holodomor<\/a>, a\u00a0human-made famine<\/a>. During\u00a0World War II<\/a>, Ukraine was\u00a0occupied by Germany<\/a>\u00a0and endured\u00a0major battles and atrocities<\/a>, resulting in 7 million civilians killed, including\u00a0most Ukrainian Jews<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ukraine gained independence in 1991 as the\u00a0Soviet Union dissolved<\/a>, declaring itself\u00a0neutral<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A new\u00a0constitution<\/a>\u00a0was adopted in 1996 as the country transitioned to a free market liberal democracy amid\u00a0endemic corruption<\/a>\u00a0and a legacy of state control.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0Orange Revolution<\/a>\u00a0of 2004\u20132005 ushered electoral and constitutional reforms. Resurgent political crises prompted a series of mass demonstrations in 2014 known as the\u00a0Euromaidan<\/a>, leading to\u00a0a revolution<\/a>, at the end of which Russia unilaterally\u00a0occupied<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0annexed<\/a>\u00a0Ukraine’s\u00a0Crimean Peninsula<\/a>, and\u00a0pro-Russian unrest<\/a>\u00a0culminated in\u00a0a war in Donbas<\/a>\u00a0with Russian-backed separatists and Russia. Russia launched\u00a0a full-scale invasion<\/a>\u00a0of Ukraine in 2022. <\/em><\/p>\n

Ukraine is a\u00a0unitary state<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0its system of government<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0semi-presidential republic<\/a>. Ukraine has a\u00a0transition economy<\/a>\u00a0and has\u00a0the lowest nominal GDP per capita in Europe<\/a>\u00a0as of 2024, with\u00a0corruption<\/a>\u00a0being a significant issue.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Due to\u00a0its extensive fertile land<\/a>, the country is an important exporter of\u00a0grain<\/a>,\u00a0though grain production has\u00a0declined<\/a>\u00a0since 2022 due to the Russian invasion, endangering global\u00a0food security<\/a>.\u00a0Ukraine is considered a\u00a0middle power<\/a>\u00a0in global affairs.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Its military<\/a>\u00a0is the\u00a0sixth largest in the world<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0eighth largest defense budget<\/a>, and\u00a0operates<\/a>\u00a0one of the world’s largest and most diverse\u00a0drone fleets<\/a>. Ukraine is a founding member of the\u00a0United Nations<\/a>\u00a0and a member of the\u00a0Council of Europe<\/a>, the\u00a0World Trade Organization<\/a>, and the\u00a0OSCE<\/a>. It has been in the process of\u00a0joining the European Union<\/a>\u00a0and applied to join\u00a0NATO<\/a>\u00a0in 2022.\u201d<\/sup> <\/em><\/p>\n
