The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions<\/a> and intergovernmental<\/a>-negotiated decisions by the member states.[14]<\/a>[15]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> The institutions are: the European Parliament<\/a>, the European Council<\/a>, the Council of the European Union<\/a>, the European Commission<\/a>, the Court of Justice of the European Union<\/a>, the European Central Bank<\/a>, and the Court of Auditors<\/a>. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The EU has developed a single market<\/a> through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area<\/a>, passport controls have been abolished.[16]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital<\/a>,[17]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade,[18]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> agriculture<\/a>,[19]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> fisheries<\/a>, and regional development<\/a>.[20]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> The monetary union<\/a> was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community<\/a> (ECSC) and the European Economic Community<\/a> (EEC), formed by the Inner Six<\/a> countries in 1951 and 1958, respectively. In the intervening years, the community and its successors have grown in size by the accession of new member states<\/a> and in power by the addition of policy areas to its remit. The Maastricht Treaty<\/a> established the European Union under its current name in 1993 and introduced European citizenship<\/a>.[21]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> The latest major amendment to the constitutional basis of the EU, the Treaty of Lisbon<\/a>, came into force in 2009.<\/p>\n

Covering 7.3% of the world population,[22]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> the EU in 2014 generated a nominal gross domestic product<\/a> (GDP) of 18.495 trillion US dollars, constituting approximately 24% of global nominal GDP<\/a> and 17% when measured in terms of purchasing power parity<\/a>.[23]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> Additionally, 26 out of 28 EU countries have a very high Human Development Index<\/a>, according to the UNDP<\/a>. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>.[24]<\/a><\/span><\/sup> Through the Common Foreign and Security Policy<\/a>, the EU has developed a role in external relations<\/a> and defence<\/a>. The union maintains permanent diplomatic missions<\/a> throughout the world and represents itself at the United Nations<\/a>, the WTO<\/a>, the G8<\/a>, and the G-20<\/a>. Because of its global influence, the European Union has been described as a current or as a potential superpower<\/a>.[25]<\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n
