{"id":19840,"date":"2025-05-14T16:31:51","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T16:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/?p=19840"},"modified":"2025-05-14T16:31:51","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T16:31:51","slug":"nairobi-county-shuts-down-freemasons-church-over-ksh-19-million-land-rate-arrears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egretnews.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/14\/nairobi-county-shuts-down-freemasons-church-over-ksh-19-million-land-rate-arrears\/","title":{"rendered":"Nairobi County shuts down Freemasons\u2019 church over Ksh.19 million land rate arrears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Nairobi County Government has clamped down the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Grand Lodge of East Africa\u2019s Freemasons<\/span>\u2019 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hall<\/span> in the city centre over land rate arrears amounting to Ksh.19 million. <\/em><em>The enforcement operation\u00a0led by Health CEC\u00a0Suzanne Silantoi, Chief Officer office the Governor Priscilla Mahinda and Chief Officer for Housing Lydia Mathia, is part of a wider county campaign targeting rate defaulters across the capital.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThis particular premises owes Nairobi County over Ksh.19 million in land rate arrears,&#8221; said Silantoi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>She added: &#8220;We will not only be clamping properties belonging to defaulters, but we are also moving to disconnect services such as water and sewer lines where necessary.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>According to county officials, the Freemasons\u2019 Hall was clamped following due process, including the issuance of demand notices and public warnings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cBefore any clamping is done, we issue demand notices and publish the same in local dailies instructing landowners to settle outstanding rates,\u201d Silantoi explained. \u201cFailure to comply gives us the legal mandate to clamp.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Chief Officer Lydia Mathia noted that while the enforcement may inconvenience tenants, the law permits the county to disconnect services for non-compliant property owners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cDisconnection of such services is within the law,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you can\u2019t pay land rates, how do you expect to benefit from county services? It is unfortunate that tenants may suffer due to their landlords\u2019 negligence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>According to County records, out of approximately 256,000 parcels of land registered in Nairobi,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citizen.digital\/news\/nairobi-county-seizes-4-cbd-buildings-over-land-rate-arrears-20-more-targeted-n362670\">only 50,000 are currently up to date with their land rates<\/a>\u2014representing a compliance rate of just 20 percent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>According to the city county, it stands to recover up to Ksh.10 billion in unpaid land rates.
