The US ambassador to Israel\u00a0criticized\u00a0Israeli policy in Judea and Samaria\u00a0at a high-profile security conference Monday, a rare public rebuke that drew an angry response from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Dan Shapiro said that Washington was \u201cconcerned and perplexed\u201d over\u00a0Israel\u2019s\u00a0strategy of building \u201cWest\u00a0Bank\u00a0settlements.\u201d Speaking to the annual conference of the Institute for National Security Studies, a top Israeli think tank, he claimed that\u00a0Israel\u2019s \u201ccontinued expansion of settlements\u201d raises questions about\u00a0Israel\u2019s intentions and its stated commitment to establishing an independent Palestinian state. Shapiro added that Israel\u00a0had also legalized some outposts despite pledges to the United States not to do so.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Israel\u2019s\u00a0closest friend, the United States is steadfast in its support for\u00a0Israel, but it was also its role to call Israel\u00a0out on its errors, Shapiro said. He alleged\u00a0that\u00a0Israel\u00a0restricts Palestinian economic development in the PA-run territories\u00a0and bemoaned what he called an inadequate response to \u201csettler\u201d violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cToo much vigilantism goes unchecked, and at times there seem to be two standards of adherence to the rule of law: one for Israelis and another for Palestinians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Shapiro\u2019s remarks sparked a terse response from Netanyahu, who said they were inappropriate at a time of heightened violence with the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, an Israeli woman was stabbed to death<\/a> \u2013 in the presence of one of her six children \u2013 by a Palestinian terrorist in her home in Otniel, a Jewish community in Judea. On Monday, a\u00a0pregnant\u00a0woman was stabbed and badly wounded in\u00a0the town of Tekoa in Judea, just south of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

\u2018PA Continues to Incite, Refuses to Negotiate\u2019<\/h1>\n

\u201cThe ambassador\u2019s comments, on a day when a mother of six is being buried and a pregnant woman is stabbed, are unacceptable and untrue,\u201d Netanyahu stated. \u201cIsrael\u00a0enforces the law on Israelis and Palestinians<\/a>. The one responsible for the diplomatic stalemate is the Palestinian Authority<\/a>, which continues to incite and refuses to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel\u00a0contends that the violence is the result of a Palestinian campaign of lies and incitement<\/a>. The Palestinians argue it is rooted in frustrations over\u00a0Israel\u2019s\u00a0nearly 50-year \u201coccupation,\u201d although the PLO was established in 1964, three years before Israel liberated the Old City of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria\u00a0\u2013 the biblical heartland that was\u00a0under Jordanian rule\u00a0for 19 years.<\/p>\n

The spat highlights the tense relations of late between the United States and\u00a0Israel, largely\u00a0over\u00a0Israel\u2019s\u00a0fierce objection to the Iranian nuclear deal.<\/p>\n
